Mindshift

Shira and Jordana introduce the Mindshift, a series of conversations with mentors who provide some mind-shifting perspectives. They introduce today’s mentor, Light Watkins, who talks about his journey to becoming a meditation teacher and author. Shira and Jordana ask Light how he pushes through periods of stagnation.

“I attribute my experiences with struggling through meditation in those early years with giving me the ability to speak to the struggle that a lot of people have and to help people to kind of break through that.” – Light Watkins

A Leap of Faith (21:50)

The discussion turns to knowing when we’re ready to take that leap of faith out of stagnation. Shira and Jordana ask Light about whether or not it’s a privilege to meditate, whether or not everyone should meditate, how to avoid becoming too goal-oriented with our practice, and how someone with no experience can start a meditation practice.

“It’s really hard to stay in a dead-end relationship or an unfulfilling job if you’ve been meditating on a daily basis. It’s really easy to do it if you haven’t been meditating because then you can just distract yourself with other things.” – Light Watkins

Ethan Nichtern lays out how we can all make a sustainable meditation practice on The Road Home Ep. 31
Five Ways to Get Out of a Rut (38:30)

Light answers a question from the community about not getting our needs met in a relationship. Shira and Jordana ask him for a list of five ways to get out of a rut, and what he does personally when he’s stuck in a rut. They ask Light a series of rapid-fire questions, and end their conversation by touching on the powerful interview between Paulo Coelho and Oprah Winfrey.

“You can’t sit on the couch and expect to get out of a rut. You gotta get up, go for a walk, maybe aim for 5,000 steps a day for a period of time. Just get moving, get walking…” – Light Watkins
