Ram Dass – Here and Now – Ep. 20 – Embracing it All

Embracing it All

Embrace the ten thousand horrible visions and the ten thousand beautiful ones; Embracing it all.

Ram Dass talks about the ideas of servant, master, and surrender and how we completely misunderstand what that means in the West. Turn off your mind and float downstream, embracing all life has to offer.

Show Notes

Ram Dass tells the story of taking the chemical compound STP for the first time; a psychedelic so powerful that the trip lasts for days. He describes the difference between taking the substance for the first time in the chaos of NYC and taking it ceremonially in the wilderness. Ram Dass reminds us of what can happen we let go and simply say, “yes, and this too.”

Diving deep into that ceremonial trip in the vast deserts of New Mexico, Ram Dass shares his full experience. He went through a whole trip about life, the Judaic traditions he was raised on, and for the first time embraced those traditions and saw himself as part of a heritage.

There is a misunderstanding about getting free of attachments, an interpretation that avoids life instead of being a part of it. Ram Dass shares the lessons he learned about attachments and how we can remember to let go and float downstream.

“I found myself in a silent booth. I saw the drama of life going on around me as if it were a series of still photographs, including my own life. I had taken this chemical and it had put me in this place where I felt a great sense of loss. It was as if you knew you were never going to pick up a mystery book that you did not already know the ending for. It was as if the adventure had gone out of life. the smell had gone out of the rose, it was all dead.”
