Danny Goldberg has been in the rock and roll business since the late nineteen sixties as a journalist, publicist, personal manager and record executive. He became interested in Eastern spirituality in his teens after taking LSD and later hearing Ram Dass’s early lectures on the radio. Through Ram Dass he met his teacher Hilda Charlton in 1972.
He began as an eighteen year old clerk in the chart department for Billboard Magazine where he later wrote reviews of records and concerts including the Woodstock Festival and after that also wrote reviews and articles for Rolling Stone and Circus Magazine among others. He worked for Led Zeppelin from 1973-1976, first as their publicist and then as Vice President of their label Swan Song Records. In 1979 he do-produced and co-directed the political rock documentary No Nukes starring Bruce Springsteen. From 1980-82 he was a partner in Modern Records, which released Stevie Nicks’ solo albums. In the late eighties and early nineties he ran Gold Mountain Entertainment whose management clients included Nirvana.
Goldberg was a major record company executive in the early and mid nineteen nineties serving as President of Atlantic Records, Chairman of Warner Bros Records and Chairman of the Mercury Records Group which distributed Triloka Records including several Krishna Das albums. Later he formed Artemis Records, which also distributed Triloka.
Goldberg currently runs Gold Village Entertainment, which manages the career of Steve Earle and other artists. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the ACLU of Southern California, The Nation Institute, Brave New Films and Public Citizen. Goldberg is the author of the books How The Left Lost Teen Spirit (Akashic Books 2005) and Bumping Into Geniuses (Gotham Books, 2009).
